Volunteers are important to us, but we also recognise that people might need to gain experience as part of their education, study or work. Over the years we have supported placements from various local schools, colleges and universities In particular, we have very strong links with Swarthmore College and have provided long term placements for several of their students with additional needs.
As well as placements within the education system, we have also worked with various organisations to help long term unemployed people back into work. This has been so successful that we have ended up employing several of the placements at the end of their time with us.
Year in Industry: Placement Interview
Lauren | Digital Marketing Internship
1) Why did you choose to complete a placement at Revive Leeds?
I already worked for Revive Leeds, so when the opportunity to complete a digital marketing and eCommerce placement arose and I knew it would be a great opportunity to be responsible for a local companies online presence and improve my skills in a friendly working environment. It was also important for me to choose a placement where my values align with that of the company I am working for and Revive's values of re-use, being environmentally friendly and supporting the local community is something I too believe in.
2) What have you done so far?
So far, I have developed and designed the Revive Leeds CIC website in its entirety. This has been hugely valuable for me to independently work on a site of this scale for improving my technical skills in programming, photography, and design. I am also going to be looking over the social media channels and then moving to eCommerce by working on the eBay site.
3) What has been your favorite thing about completing a placement at Revive Leeds?
For me, the level of independence has been my favourite thing about my placement. I am able to ask for help when needed, but working in this way has allowed me to pinpoint areas of weakness in my knowledge and practical skills. As a result I have been able to be develop these weaknesses during this design and development process.
4) What skills have you learnt?
I think one of the most important skills I have developed is time management. This is the first time I have completed a project of this size. In doing so, I now have a better idea of estimating the length of time it takes to complete certain tasks and the amount of small tasks involved in creating innovative websites. Furthermore, I have been able to revisit Adobe software, such as Photoshop and learn entirely new programs including Adobe After Effects.
5) What do you hope to achieve by the end of your placement?
I hope to provided Revive Leeds CIC with a innovative and well-developed website. I also want to improve their social media presence, create promotional material and increase income through assisting with eBay sales. I also hope to learn and develop my practical skills and create high quality work for the company which I can later feature in my portfolio.
